Expert Interview Pattern — Long-Form Answers Cluster Around Coordination Mechanisms

What was observed

In a series of 24 placeholder interviews with subject-matter experts across distributed-systems and platform-design fields, when asked open-ended questions about "what's hard about this work," 70%+ of answers more than 200 words referenced coordination mechanisms specifically — not technical complexity, not stakeholder management, not staffing. The pattern was unusually consistent across otherwise heterogeneous experts.

Drawn from Johnson (2019) Chapter 4 and informal follow-up interviews.

Why it matters

Suggests that the "felt difficulty" of distributed work clusters around coordination, not around the more commonly-cited dimensions (technical complexity, scope ambiguity, etc.). If the felt difficulty is in coordination, then tools and patterns that improve coordination should have outsized impact on perceived productivity.

  • weekend-readership-spike — quantitative engagement-clustering signal; this observation surfaces the qualitative analogue.

Placeholder. Numbers fictional. Used to exercise the observation template and the multi-observation upstream pattern for insights.
